CPAP-Therapy
The most successful treatment for severe sleep apnea is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. Thereby, the patient is respirated with an oxygen mask during the night. The decision to use this form of therapy is usually taken following a detailed examination in the sleep laboratory. As successful as the use of CPAP has been, the burden involved for patients and their partners is quite high.

Masks like these are used to feed pressurized air to the sleeper.
It is difficult to get used to CPAP as the machine gets electricity through a complex cabling and therefore is loud and cumbersome. Thus, the CPAP treatment is only recommended in severe cases.
